My question is, "If you have Bachelor's degree in Computer Information Systems" could you still be considered qualified to get on in the HIM department of hospital. I am currently taking a Health Information Management career training course from Penn Foster and I was wondering if I would have the credentials to even get hired for these types of positions?

Thank you for your question. Now, CIS people have a huge advantage in the HIM field due to the fact that EHRs are becoming standard in so many facilities. I work in a LTACH and we are in the middle of implementing a full EHR and it enloves so much IT/IS work that someone with that type of experience is greatly desirable.

If I had that type of background the first places I would entertain for possible employment would be the EHR software providers. There's always a need for development and conversion project implementers.  Some of the few companies I'm familiar with are EPIC, Allscripts, HCS Interactant, Softmed, Healthland, and Horizon Patient Folder.

Please read this article to find out opportunities for education/certification options.

I hope that helps!

  3. I want to thank you for your blog and all the information you offer. I just graduated from a Health Information Technology program at Devry University and currently studying for the RHIT test. I too experienced when applying for coding jobs "sorry you don't have experience you need to have at least 2 years experience". Or they would say " I don't hire non experienced coders". But with prayer and persistence I finally got a call from a hospital to come to a interview for their Clinical Coding Specialist position. The manager said she is looking to train someone. I really hope I get it.

  4. I am noticing that many people are having issues with getting experience or a job after graduating. I didn't go to an ahima accredited school because of the cost. I decided to go a different route and went on faith. I was blessed last year with a medical records coordinator position last year, which really helped fine tune my record review skills. I hope to get into a coding internship I applied for but if not I am not worried at the moment. Preparing to take the Certified professional coder exam through AAPC.
